ABSTRACT:

OBJECTIVE: To assess the tolerability and efficacy of Iron Sucrose Complex (ISC) (Megafer Injection) with rapid administration (within 15 minutes) in Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) during later stages of pregnancy.

METHODS:  Iron sucrose complex (Megafer Injection) was infused intravenously at a rapid rate (within 15 minutes) without any test dose and its effects were assessed on both clinical and hematological parameters in pregnant anemic women. 100 (one hundred) pregnant women with hemoglobin level of 10 gm/dl or lower were given a single dose (200 mg) of ISC (Megafer Injection) intravenously. Any allergic reactions or adverse events were noted. Patients’ clinical status before, during and after the infusion and the Hemoglobin (Hb) levels were monitored.

RESULTS:  Mean Hb level increase was around 1 gm/dl after 15 days of a single dose infusion (200 mg) given rapidly within 15 minutes. Only one minor allergic reaction was noted.

CONCLUSIONS:  Iron sucrose complex (Megafer Injection), when given in a maximum single dose at a rapid rate to pregnant women with IDA, was very well tolerated and significantly improved the hemoglobin level.
