OBJECTIVE: To determine haematological disorders during interferon and ribavirin therapy in patients of chronic hepatitis C.

STUDY DESIGN: Interventional descriptive Place and duration: Department of medicine, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro Hyderabad from September 2007 to August 2009.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred cases of chronic hepatitis C proven by Anti HCV and HCV RNA positive with baseline hemoglobin (Hb), total leukocyte count (TLC) and platelate count (PLT) within the normal reference ranges, who were treated by interferon 2b (million unite subcutaneously three times / week) and oral Ribavirin (1000 – 1200 mg per day) were include. All patients were assessed for Hemoglobin, total leukocyte count and platelate count at 12 weeks and 24 weeks during. Data were analyzed in statistical program SPSS version 16.0.

RESULTS: One hundred patients of which 32(32.0%) male and 68(68.0%) females with mean age + SD 34.0 + 9.72 and 35.1 + 8.22 respectively were included. There was a significant drop of 2 gm/dL of mean Hb (p <0.001), mean TLC of 1.11x109 /mm3  (p <0.001) and 52x109 /mm3 of mean platelates count (p <0.001) from baseline at 24 weeks of therapy, but statistically no significant difference was observed between male and female patients. Clinically significant anemia (i.e. Hb <10 gm/dL) developed in 38%, Leucopenia (i.e. TLC < 4000x109 /mm3 ) in 13% and thrombocytopenia (i.e. platelate <150x109/mm3) in 17% of patients at 24 weeks of therapy.

CONCLUSION: Interferon and ribavirin has significant adverse effects on hematological parameters.
