PURPOSE: To determine the success rate of probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction uptill twenty four months of age.
DESIGN: Quasi-experimental
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology Unit I, Eye Hospital, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Hyderabad Sindh Pakistan from January 2007 to April 2009.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 90 eyes of ninety children aged uptill twenty four months with uncomplicated congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction underwent probing. The children were divided into two groups, Group-A (4-12 months), Group-B (13-24 months). Success was defined as complete resolution of signs and symptoms. Sampling technique was convenience technique and data was collected on SPSS 11version.
RESULTS: The success rate was 93.3% in Group-A, 84.4% in Group-B. The overall cure rate for the entire study was 89%.
CONCLUSION: Probing is highly successful in treating the congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. However, when probing is done within first year of life, it is very effective and results in complete resolution of symptoms.
