OBJECTIVES: The study was conducted to assess the various presentations of toxic goitre and to determine the effectiveness of various modes of management of toxic goitre at CMCH, Larkana.
DESIGN: This was a comparative case series study.
SETTING: The study was carried out at surgical unit-I, II & III of Chandka Medical College Hospital, Larkana.
SUBJECTS: This study was carried out during August 2002 to July 2007 on 100 patients.
RESULTS: The commonest presentation of thyrotoxicosis was observed to be diffuse toxic goitre (56%) followed by toxic multinodular goitre (40%) and toxic solitary nodule (04%). 12% of cases were treated by anti-thyroid therapy while 68% of patients were operated and 20% treated with radio active iodine therapy.
CONCLUSION: It is concluded that in thyrotoxic goiter, surgery gives quick results, is effective and does not need a prolong follow up. Surgery seems to be good alternative to antithyroid drugs which does not allow a permanent remission of hyperthroids and radioactive iodine therapy leads a long term follow up because of induced hypothyroidism which require life long thyroxine therapy.
