OBJECTIVE: To know the awareness of students of Chandka Medical College Larkana regarding hypertension, its hazards on health and its management.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional KAP study.
METHODOLOGY: All voluntary basis participating students, studying in all batches of Chandka Medical College Larkana were provided a standard questionaire regarding different aspects of hypertension. Collected data was analyzed through SPSS 15 version and p value was derived through Chi square test.
RESULTS: Total 516 students were included in the study. 328 (63.6%) students were male, while 128 (36.4%) were females. 507(98.3%) students responded positively for the awareness and 9(1.7%) students were unaware about hypertension.138(27.2%) students were from most junior batch responding positively (p=0.287). 505(97.5%) students recognize hypertension as harmful for the health, while remaining are unaware. 323(63.7%) students were male and 184(36.3%) were females(p=0.614). 38(7.4%) students are hypertensive. 36(7%) students check their blood pressure daily, 32(6.2%)monthly and remaining occasionally or not at all. All hypertensive were advised for medications but blood pressure of 23 students is well controlled. 44(8.7%) students are aware about angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors as antihyperten- sive drug (p=0.436), while 43(8.5%) were aware about B-blockers (p=0.436) and 32 (6.3%) for diuretics(p=0.305).
CONCLUSION: Awareness about hypertension and its hazardous effects on health is good in students of Chandka Medical College Larkana but awareness of anti-hypertensive drugs and achieving well controlled blood pressure still needs improvement.
