OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of amputation in different diseases, one year study patients presenting at the department of orthopaedic surgery Chandka Medical College & Hospital Larkana.
DESIGN: Descriptive study.
PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted at the department of orthopaedic surgery Chandka medical college & Hospital larkana from February 2008 to March 2009.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included all those patients who underwent different limb amputations in the orthopaedic surgery department. Patients age, sex and disease which leading to amputation were recorded.
RESULTS: During the one year study period,120 patients underwent amputations. 50% patients were of diabetic foot, 15% grass cutting & sugar cane machine injuries, 10% road traffic accidents, 10% tumors, 5% fire arm injuries, 5% peripheral vascular diseases, 5% electric burns & osteomylitis,There were 86 male and 34 female. 70% were above 30 years of age group and 30 % were below 30 years age group were affected.
CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus was found to be most common and leading cause of amputations. Grass cutting machine amputations more common in females in this area
