OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the functional results of Bristow and Puttiplatt procedures in Recurrent traumatic Anterior dislocation of Shoulder in Adults.
STUDY DESIGN: Quasi Experimental.
PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Department of Orthopaedic surgery, Chandka Medical College Larkana from January 2007 to December 2008.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty seven patients with recurrent traumatic anterior dislocation of Shoulder , irrespective of sex, with ages between 18 and 55 years were included in the study and evaluated for functional results after the Bristow and Puttiplatt procedures . Data was analysed using SPSS statistical package.
Results: Twenty seven patients with Traumatic Recurrent Anterior dislocation of Shoulder were treated with either Bristow( 18 patients) or Puttiplatt (9) procedures.In Bristow procedure 10 patients had excellent results(55.5%), 6 had good results(33.3%), 1 had fair (5.55%) and only 1 patient had poor result(5.55%). On the other hand only one patient with the puttiplatt had excellent result(11.1%), two had good results( 22.2%), four had fair (44.4%) and two patients were seen with poor results(22.2%). P. value was 0.023.
CONCLUSION: The Bristow procedure is indicated in recurrent traumatic Anterior dislocation of Shoulder in Adults, with minimum restriction of external rotation. With this procedure excellent range of motion is achieved. It is easy, simple and very effective with minimum stiffness and complications.
